Indian forces occupy 4.3 lakh kanals of land in JK: Govt

The Jammu and Kashmir government has revealed that at least 4,30,933 kanals of land across the entire state are under the occupation of various Indian security agencies including the Army.

Of 4.3 lakh kanals of land, 3,79,933 kanals are being occupied by security agencies in the Kashmir region, including Ladakh. At least 1,21,125.07 kanals of land are under the occupation of security forces including the Indian Army, the CRPF, BSF and other agencies in the Kashmir Valley alone.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was responding to a question by National Conference legislator Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar who had sought district-wise details of land occupied by security forces in the state.

In Kashmir, at least 10,758 kanals of private land are under unauthorised occupation by the Army and other security forces agencies, the government revealed.

The Chief Minister, who is also the J&K Home Minster, informed the lower house of J&K Legislature that the security agencies mostly occupy land in Ladakh division.

The CM said that over 2,555 hectares (ha) of land are under unauthorised Army occupation in Jammu division.

However, the government said that Kishtwar district is the only district where the Army and other security forces do not hold any unauthorised land.

The CM said that Leh district of Ladakh was leading the table with over 7,197 ha of land under unauthorised security forces occupation, followed by Kargil (5,742.9 ha).

Northern Kashmir districts of Bandipora and Baramulla together accounted for 3,403.8 ha of land under unauthorised security forces occupation, the government said.

In Kashmir division, Shopian district accounted for 31.3 ha of land under unauthorised occupation, the lowest in the division, the CM added.

The government reply details that the total quantity of land occupied by various security agencies in the Jammu region is 51,116 kanals and 12 murals while in Kashmir, including the Ladakh region, the forces have occupied around 3,79,817 kanals of land.

Going over the entire state, the government revealed that 34,598 kanals of land are under the occupation of security agencies in Baramulla district in northern Kashmir while Bandipora has 5,782.5 kanals of land under the security forces.

In Kupwara, the forces have occupied around 12,115 kanals of land the government said.

In southern Kashmir, 7,829 kanals of land in Anantnag district are under various security agencies while Pulwama has 15,276.4 kanals of land under government forces. Shopian has the security agencies laying hold to 4,803.15 kanals of land.

In Budgam, the government said, around 33,478 kanals of land are under the possession of the Army and other government forces agencies while in Ganderbal 2,172.17 kanals of land are under these forces. Srinagar has 4,951 kanals of land being used by the Army, BSF, CRPF and other armed forces.

The data said that Kargil has 1,14,859.13 kanals of land under the occupation of several security agencies while Leh has 1,43,949 kanals of land under the Army and other forces agencies.

The government told the House that most of the Jammu land, almost 42,337 kanals, is under the Indian Army.

The J&K winter capital has at least 36,620 kanals of land under various security agencies.

In Udhampur, the government said that security forces are holding 162 kanals of land while in Samba, the forces occupy 3,862 kanals of land. It said also that government forces are occupying 388 kanals of land in Kathua while in Reasi, 684 kanals of land are under the security forces.

It said that 62 kanals, 19.13 kanals, 1,697 kanals, and 7,617 kanals of land in Ramban, Doda, Rajouri and Poonch are under various security agencies without any authorisation.

The Chief Minister said a major chunk of over 12,940 ha of land are under the illegal occupation of the Army and other security forces in Ladakh region, followed by 5,906 ha in the Kashmir Valley and 2,555 ha in Jammu division.
