Cold wave might tighten its nose over Jammu and Kashmir for five days beginning December 11 in view of likelihood of moderate to heavy rain, snow at widespread places across Jammu and Kashmir.

A fresh western disturbance is most likely to affect the state with moisture feeding taking place from the Arabian Sea resulting in moderate to heavy rain/snow at widespread place in all the three regions – Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh – of the state, a top met officer said.

The main activity of this system (moderate to heavy rain/snow) is likely to occur during December 12-13 and gradual decrease thereafter, Director met Sonam Lotus said.

He said this will be the first ‘major wet spell’ during the current season for the state.

While it will bring relief to farmers especially those who have sown Rabi crops in plains, he said but warned that this weather system may lead to disruption of surface and air links.

The traffic on Srinagar-Jammu, Srinagar-Leh and Mughal Road could be affected.

The weathermen also issued a  warning that higher reaches of Kashmir, Ladakh  and Hilly area of Jammu are most  likely to receive moderate to Heavy snowfall during December 11 to 15 in general and particularly  during  December 12-13.

There will be significant fall in day temperature and slight rise in night temperatures during the period.
