Ramban road accident: 22 killed, 13 injured

At least 22 passengers were killed and 13 others injured, most of them critically, in a road accident in Kelamorh area of Ramban district on the Srinagar-Jammu highway on Saturday, officials said.

An official said that the accident took place when a mini-bus on way from Banihal to Ramban skilled off the road near Kelamorh and fell into a 200 feet deep gorge in the morning.
Majority of passengers died on the spot while few succumbed to their injuries later, the official said, confirming the death of at least 22 persons in the accident.

Many of the critically-injured passengers were airlifted from Chanderkote to Command Hospital Udhampur, the official said, adding that one injured person was referred to Bone and Joints Hospital Srinagar. The death toll, according to officials, may go up given the condition of some injured persons presently being treated in the hospitals.

Earlier, a rescue operation was launched by the police, district administration, Red Cross volunteers, SDRF personnel and army.

It was chaos and confusion at the district hospital Ramban where people were seen searching for their relatives who were either among dead or injured.

The bodies were handed over to their relatives after completion of medico-legal formalities, a police official said.
